Basing my caloric intake off fitbit data

Hi, So I use a Fitbit to count my daily steps, excercise, etc. The app has a function that allows me to base my food intake off the amount excercise and movement I've done that day, but I'm unsure if I can trust the data. I feel like it tends to high ball the amount I might burn during a work out, and if that's true than the amount I should eat is probably less than the amount listed by the app.

Has anyone else used a Fitbit or a smart watch to help determine how much they can eat to create a deficit? Was it accurate or successful?

Or is it more reliable to just set a specific daily intake and follow that?
