Hey, I'm almost 14 years old. I'm female, 5'2, and around 130 pounds. I have a normal BMI, but I've always been pretty chubby, and I've noticed I gained excess fat since 2 years ago due to a poor diet and quitting sports. I can even see some stretch marks on my inner thighs. I've researched and found out that I'm skinny fat. People say I seem slim when I'm really not if I take off my shirt and wear shorts. I have lots of fat, especially around my stomach, back, and legs. I can't even do one proper push up right now.
I have no idea what to do. We have an elliptical at our house that I've been running frequently on, but since I found out that cardio sabotages your goal of gaining muscle, I did some strength workouts with 10 pound dumbells. But then I found out that to slim your legs you'd have to do cardio, instead of strength exercises. Now I'm confused.
What's the difference between "toning" and "building muscle"? And for a skinny fat teen like me, what do you think I should priortize, strength or cardio, or should I implement both in my week? I could do something like run 15 minutes and then 15 minutes of arms or legs and then do one day of rest, but I'm still really confused on this whole topic.
(I admit, for try past year, I've been crazy on extreme dieting, but I eat around 1200-1600 calories everyday now, with lots of protein, moderate fat, and moderate carbs that come from fruits and vegetables, no junk food unless it's a Sunday!)
