Hi guys. I have been trying to lose weight for about three years now. I was able to lose 70 pounds over these years but recently I put on 20 pounds. I am 5’6 and started at 245 pounds and am now 195 pounds.
I have not always been fat. I actually grew up with good eating habits and did not ever leave the normal BMI range until I was 18. I am now 23.
I have been an athlete for 13 years, and I am preparing for my second year of collegiate volleyball that starts in August. I screwed up big time by gaining 20 pounds. I want to lose 40 pounds between now and August in order to be more competitive and useful to my team. However, I want to maintain and build my strength. Is it possible to eat at a big caloric deficit for about 5 months and be active (cardio AND lifting heavy) and still maintain and gain strength? I don’t want to make it impossible for me to get stronger, I need to be strong to play my sport. I was thinking if I take multivitamins, drink enough water, and ate lean protein and fruits and vegetables then it should be ok to be in a severe deficit for a short period of time. Just because this is my last chance to compete. Ever. My body has plenty of fat to burn to supply the energy food would.
TLDR; Can I eat at a big caloric deficit as an obese person while taking vitamins to get the appropriate nutrients needed AND work out by lifting and cardio and still get strong? While losing weight? Or will my muscle and strength be compromised?
