Well knowing this person very well I had a hunch what the problem was, and I was right. You see going to the gym for 2 hours, 5 days a week does not mean you are working out for 2 hours, 5 days a week.
After a few minutes of talking with him, this was the timeline I was able to piece together for my gym rat friend: "Your gym is 15 minutes each way, and you are counting that time. You take 30 minutes to shower and change after you are done with your work out. You do maybe 10 minutes on the treadmill, 5 minutes of abs, and then 3 or 4 machines for 5 minutes each. That is 35 minutes tops of barely breaking a sweat . . the rest is just listening to music, taking IG selfies, watching bad tv, and wasting time."
After all that he rewards himself with a "protein" smoothie that has double the calories that he burned during his workout. So yeah, he is left with no results, lots of frustration and wasted hours, and possible even more extra weight than when he started.
And of course the reason I was able to so accurately describe his situation was because back in the day (before CICO) I too would sometimes go through the 2 smoothies hours a day / 5 days a week at the gym periods.
