From time to time, I see comments in threads here on /r/loseit that decry the use of acronyms like NSV, IF or CICO. It can sometimes be an intimidating thing to start posting here if you feel like the acronyms are overwhelming.
This same thought cropped up on /r/Space a few years ago, so I wrote an acronym expanding bot that will listen out for acronyms in a thread, and post its own comment explaining them; here's an example of one of the comments it's left recently.
Acronyms, initialisms, abbreviations, contractions, and other phrases which expand to something larger, that I've seen in this thread:
Fewer Letters More Letters DARPA (Defense) Advanced Research Projects Agency, DoD DoD US Department of Defense ESA European Space Agency JSC Johnson Space Center, Houston MSFC Marshall Space Flight Center, Alabama NOAA National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, responsible for US generationmonitoring of the climateSLS Space Launch System heavy-lift Selective Laser Sintering, contrast DMLS ULA United Launch Alliance (Lockheed/Boeing joint venture)
Jargon Definition Starlink SpaceX's world-wide satellite broadband constellation
Decronym tries its level best to not spam a thread: it only ever posts one comment and keeps that comment up to date, and it'll only post when thresholds have been reached for thread age and length. If that sounds like a good idea to have in /r/loseit, do post some acronyms in this thread and I'll start putting a database together before petitioning the mods.
Thanks, you guys rock.
