context: a friend of mine was headed home for an indefinite period of time ("home" being a 12 hour plane ride away, so kind of a big deal) just yesterday, and the day before, she invited a bunch of folks out for drinks, including yours truly. now i dont know about you all, but when i drink, i drink. i logged ~1k cals that night in alcohol alone and was out for 7 hours. i don't make it a habit lol, for various reasons. but it was her going away party for fricks sake, i was practically obligated.
anyway. got notice of the get-together early in the day, so had plenty of time to save up calories and prepare to log a bit extra. 1500 is my limit on "cheat" days, i usually aim for 1200 and have done a good job of that for the past 2 weeks. i had 200 cal bowl of veg for lunch and by the time the evening rolled around i was ready to go.
we get to the bar. we start drinking. i'm doing beer since 1) i've barely eaten anyway and 2) it's way more reliable/easier to track than mixed drinks or shots, which the area we live in is notorious for watering the f**k out of. two 630 mL bottles in and i'm really feelin it. i'm feelin it bad. the thought half-occurs to me to order some fries (aka ""chips""), but i resist the temptation, because my friend is ordering these delicious roasted garlic pea-things from a nearby convenience store to the bar. and man, these peas. LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THESE PEAS. they are magical. i don't know if you can get them overseas. probably at specialty stores. doesn't matter actually, if you can't find them, whatever, more peas for me. they're like, fried or something, super crunchy and coated in seasoning. i love those damn things.
so they arrive at the bar. and in my drunken stupor i realize... the peas are in PACKAGING. packaging has NUTRITIONAL INFO ON IT. I CAN LOG THESE. so i get the frick to work. mind you, the packaging is in another language completely (one in which i am at best only of intermediate proficiency), and besides that calorie counts here are listed exclusively in kJ which means i have to translate them into calories with ANOTHER app every single time i want to log a new item. i scanned the bar code and listed everything on the package - calories, protein, carbs, fat, and sodium. and the real kicker - the peas came in individual smaller packets all packaged in larger bags. the small bags didn't have grams listed on them. so what did i do? i found the grams on the larger bag, counted how many packages were in it, and divided the total grams by the number of smaller packets in the bag. i had four little packets' worth of like 15 peas each for a grand total of (approximately) 213 calories. and you KNOW everyone at the table was giving me shit for it lmao. but i didnt care. all i could think about in that moment was LOGGING MY DANG PEAS.
and you know what else? i stopped eating the peas before i wanted to stop eating them. it was like logging them in that moment reminded me that they had calories, and couldn't be eaten indefinitely without consequence. this is the second time i've been out drinking since i started tracking my food, and each time i'm surprised at how well...or even, dare i say..intuitively? i control my intake. and wow, i just feel so proud of myself. i'm only 2 weeks in and i'm really trying very hard not to get too excited. but man that was a moment for me lol.
i know there are others like me out there....other weirdos that are almost too dedicated for their own good. please feel free to share your most ridiculous/hilarious experiences with calorie counting in the comments 😉😉
(obligatory please drink responsibly!!!! i am a grown adult woman whose husband was a 15 minute walk/phone call away. take care of yourselves yall.)
