Things Aren’t Getting Better

“Not nah John, We’ve got to get on with the film show, Hollywood waits at the end of the rainbow, Who cares what it’s about, As long as the kids go?” Roger Waters

Mental health is dependent on society. How can one be individually well when collectively were are insane?

sinking ships photoProfits. I have been doing some thinking this morning about reality. Words are thrown out to ‘obfuscate’ which is a fancy word to confuse. I heard it once said that the company couldn’t raise wages because it would cut into profits. Let’s look at what they are really saying.

In any organization, things are produced or services are rendered. Let us look at Amazon for example. The workers would find the products, package them and ship them out. I know it is extremely more complicated than that but we are simplifying the example to understand the basic principle. Management, in turn, organizes and coordinates the labor. While they don’t do any real work they still dedicate their time and services. Then you have the owners which own the stock. Now when it comes to dividing the money generated from the industry the owners receive the excess while the workers get a pittance. Some workers live in their cars unable to pay rent for an apartment let alone own a home. The sad thing is that these ‘owners’ do absolutely nothing. Instead, they are parasites sucking off of the work of others.

How can anybody maintain good mental health when they work full time and yet their wages aren’t sufficient to meet their basic needs? This is especially true in a society which determines one’s self-worth by the amount of material possessions one has or the size of their bank account.

We live in a world of lies and hypocrisies. Look at the world of Christianity. Jesus said, “If you want to be perfect sell all that you have and give it to the poor and then come follow me.” Funny how people say they follow Jesus but none want to be perfect. This is especially true of these television evangelists. Instead of soliciting funds for jet planes and mansions they should be giving to the poor.

I could go on to point out many flaws in our society. How about our soldiers? We call them America’s best. The army twists their minds, they go kill and destroy, and when they return broken they are almost forgotten. Certainly, the people on Wall Street, who directly profit of their misfortune aren’t going out of their way to help them. On average over twenty veterans a days commit suicide. In this example, we can easily see the direct correlation of an insane system adversely affecting mental health.

It is easy to criticize and tear down, though I am not really tearing down. If the truth hurts your position or your ideas then you had best do a sincere self-examination. So the question is what can we as individuals do to help our fellow man?

What we need is a people’s movement. Not one that is political but more social and spiritual. That is one of our problems in our country expecting other people to do what we as a people need to do. It is not the government’s responsibility to feed poor people but it is the peoples’. However, the government as an extension of the people could and should be utilized as a tool. Grand strategies are great but what it breaks down to is everyone doing their part. Generals with great strategies don’t win the war it is the soldier on the battlefield who does the real work.

As a member of the mentally ill community, I am particularly sensitive to their needs and desires. Perhaps that greatest need for a person with mental illness is to be accepted. Though things are improving we are ostracized a great deal. That is the reason why so many keep their mental illness as a secret. They fear being exposed and rejected. There is a man I know who has a carpentry business. He hired a worker who turned out to be a good worker. Unfortunately, the worker began to miss days.  Eventually, the carpenter had to let him go to find somebody more reliable. Over the course of time, it was revealed that the worker had a mental illness. The carpenter wished that the worker had told him about his problems and that they could have worked around it.

But not everybody has that attitude. The world is full of selfish, greedy people, who put business and making money over everything. The saddest part is our society rewards, such heinous individuals. And so I have gone full circle this world is insane.

What kind of person are you? Do you just go with the flow? Do you question what you are told and how things are done? Are you a blessing or a curse to others?

“More Than The Madness” is my memoirs. It talks about my mental illness and my walk of faith. It also shows me as a unique human being. https://amzn.to/2nwIupf
