So yeah, as the title says, I can’t believe I’ve just signed up for the Cardiff half in 2019; its 13 miles long (20km) and is next October! I'm nervous as hell already!
Around 6 months ago the thought of running just a few km was out of the question for me, I've always played football most of my life but only as a (overweight) keeper so never had to run long distances. I gave the sport up at the end of last season due to being a dad and spending more time with her. I weighed 16 and half stone (about 230 pounds) in June and decided now I wasn't playing no-more to actually do something about my weight. I'm currently 14 and a half stone and am aiming to lose about 2 stone more.
I've always had problems with long distance running; things like shin splints would make it impossible for me to get more than 2 km without stopping, but since I've been losing weight the running is becoming so much easier. I did 5km in the gym without stopping yesterday, and on the weekend ran 10km in 72 minutes. When I started in the gym it was taking me 30 minutes to do 3km as I stopping to walk so often.
I’ve never run this far in my adult life and the thought of 20km is absolutely daunting right now, but the fact I can do half already is such a big motivation. It’s driving me on to drop more weight and it feels fantastic. I’ve got a 10km race in January first so I’m aiming to get that to done in around 60 minutes and be weighing around 82kg’s by then.
