I started losing in late May/early June after a round of bloodwork that scared the crap out of me. Grandparents on both sides have diabetes, and I've always been overweight and ate like crap, so it was only a matter of time. After a stint with depression in college, and battling anxiety about my health for ages, I went to the doctor at the end of May of this year, where I heard what I already knew: high blood pressure, hypertension, risk of heart disease, and likely diabetes. Blood work was alarmingly high in glucose and Hemoglobin a1c when it came back a few days later.
Since that doctors visit, I've made some major changes. I was extremely committed to eating healthy and CICO in the first two months. Some of that has fallen off, I've realized it's okay to go over budget sometimes as long as you're keeping a weekly net deficit. I work in politics, and with the busy season, I'm also indulging a bit here and there. No longer eating entire pizzas or 2-3 cookies, but replacing it with sashimi, yogurt, snacks from Naturebox, Halo Top (god bless it), and other lower calorie "treats."
Today, after about 3.5 months, I got bloodwork results back from when I went in on Wednesday. I'm no longer in diabetic range, I'm not even in pre-diabetic range. My Hemoglobin a1c fell 1.9%, and my blood glucose was totally normal.
I was really refreshed to see that. Yes, I've felt better and lost 35 lbs so far, but to see 1) an indicator that what I'm doing is working and 2) an indicator that I haven't relapsed, and that I've formed some good habits, was the best news I've received in a long time.
You can do it and lose the weight. If my lazy ass can, so can you. It's hard, and it's a tough journey. But soon, the habits you form will become totally normal.
