Maybe it’s just me but I feel like this is a common thing to do.
I have worn clothes all up the spectrum from S-XL. For some reason I hang onto the clothes from my freshman and sophomore year of high school when I wore S/M “just in case” I lose weight and can fit into them again. I wear a size L right now. I was going through my closet and I realized I have 4 types of clothes.
-
Shirts that are slightly too large, I don’t particularly like them but when I gained a lot of weight they were the only clothes that fit. Now that I’ve lost about ten pounds they still “fit” but I don’t feel good in them so I never wear them.
-
All of my high school clothes. (For reference I’m 19 so HS wasn’t that long ago for me so a lot of my old clothes would still be appropriate for my age). A lot of my high school clothes especially from junior year I could potentially wear if I lost about 20 pounds so I can’t justify getting rid of them because it would feel like a waste getting rid of perfectly good clothes that I still like that might fit me again someday.
-
Shirts I buy that are slightly too small but were a really good deal or just an outfit I really liked. All of these clothes I buy under the premise of “oh they almost fit if I lost ten pounds they’d fit perfectly”.
-
Clothes that actually fit.
-I decided to separate my clothes because when I moved back from college I had a ridiculous amount of clothes that I never wore and just took up space in my tiny dorm closet that were just slightly too small.
-this year my plan is to just bring clothes that fit no exceptions.
I always assume I’m going to lose weight but I never actually make an effort to do so. The ten pounds I have lost were only because I went from being sedentary to having to walk all around in college and eating less due to shitty campus food.
I guess this is my declaration for a change for the better from now on. I want to fit into my old clothes. I want to lose weight so I am going to be the one who makes that happen.
Since I’ve separated my clothes into those that fit, almost fit, and will be a while before they ever fit again it’ll be easy for having clothes to wear when I’m smaller. Since I am older now, I should probably buy more age appropriate clothes but a lot of these slightly too small clothes will be good staples.
All I know is that it will be incredibly satisfying when I fit into my smaller clothes and the next time I sort through my closet, it will be to donate my clothes which are too large for me to make room for new ones which actually fit.
