I’ve always been somewhat overweight and have half-heartedly tried to lose weight several times. Following a lot of stress and trauma, new BC, and poor diet choices in my first year of college, I was mortified to realize how much heavier I was when I came home.
I didn’t think I could do it. One of my friends was part of Orangetheory, a fitness studio that offers intense hourly workouts which are supposed to burn 600+ calories at once. I knew it would keep me accountable and wanted to join, but at $160 a month, it was so expensive.
I recognize how much privilege I had to even seriously consider the option, but at the end, I couldn’t justify spending that much money on exercise when I knew my local gym was only $25/month. Instead, I re-downloaded MyFitnessPal, started seriously tracking my calories, setting an exercise schedule, and working to lose weight. I started at 1500 calories/day and have since been able to maintain a 1200 calories/day schedule. Despite some lows, this subreddit (and a couple others) helped me stay on track.
I have one more week before going back to college. Though I’m still not at my end goal, I know I’ve created a healthy routine and mindset that will keep me losing weight during the school year, even if it’s at a slower pace.
I’ve also always wanted to get my hair dyed. With some of the money I saved from Orangetheory, I decided to treat myself, and I could not be happier with the result. My new hair, combined with my body that I’ve been working so hard for, is ready to do this whole college thing better this time!
