When You Reach Your Limit

“Hey you, don’t tell me there’s no hope at all, Together we stand, divided we fall” Roger Waters

I am a minister in the Church of Christ. In fact, according to the Bible, every member should be a minister. So it just so happened I reached out to a woman going through living hell.

Diane is going through some very bad times. She has brain cancer and as a result of that, she is blind. Also, she is going through divorce settlements where her ex-husband doesn’t want to give her any money. Diane has no money and not many people supporting her. She has to go through the rigors of the trial and act as her own attorney as she can’t afford to hire one.

I am going through a lot of stuff but not as bad as Diane. My wife Sylvia has dementia and is bedridden. Sylvia can still walk when I hold her up. As far as showering goes it is very difficult. Sylvia has a seat to sit in the shower but she needs to stand up for about five minutes so I can clean where I can’t get to when she’s sitting. It is hard for Sylvia to stand I am concerned that she will fall. I am extremely careful in helping her but it is a struggle.  I too am running out of money.

Of course, I gave Diane all those encouraging words that somebody needs to hear. To be honest, I only half believed them myself, but I know it is what somebody needs at a time of testing and crisis. That you have to find the strength to carry on. That you should take things one day at a time. That there could be a bright future if only you cling on. That life is a learning experience and you are getting some valuable lessons.

Well, this morning when I woke up feeling sorry for myself I recalled those same words I spoke to Diane. It motivated me to get out of bed and face the hardships of my day. To do anything less would simply expose me as a hypocrite. I firmly believe that God tests people and that we need to have faith to carry on.

I did a few more things for Diane after I hung up the phone. I got down on my knees and prayed for her. I tried to find somebody in her area to minister to her. And finally, I wrote her a song to encourage her. Who knows maybe somebody will put my lyrics to music and I can take some of the money to help Diane. It took me about ten minutes to write the song. It was one of those rare moments where inspiration hijacks the persona and the words write themselves.

Hey Diane

Once the world was a wonderful place
Full of love full of joy full of grace
Nothing good lasts forever so it seems
It was hello nightmares goodbye dreams

Hey Diane I know you can
Hang on for another day
Hey Diane I know you can
Have the hope to pray
Hey Diane I know you can
Find that narrow way

Well darkness is a dangerous foe
And friends they seem to come and go
But somehow we learn how to get by
We find the strength to give another try

Hey Diane I know you can
Hang on for another day
Hey Diane I know you can
Have the hope to pray
Hey Diane I know you can
Find that narrow way

Somewhere I hear the sweet sound of angelic choirs
In a land so grand that none have any desires
By faith we walk this world though blind
Hold on to the love ones who treated you kind

One day you will awake to the light
And life will be an endless delight
Hold on Diane with all of your might
Tomorrow is going to be bright

Hey Diane I know you can
Hang on for another day
Hey Diane I know you can
Have the hope to pray
Hey Diane I know you can
Find that narrow way

Please check out my books. “Murmurings Of A Mad Man” is a book of poetry written in strict meter and rhyme that tells of one of my trying times in life. It deals with a time when I was at a state psychiatric hospital called Graystone. It is the same hospital Woodie Guthrie was at. https://amzn.to/2L2P9BB
