How does the Weight Watchers diet promote weight loss?

My mom is on weight watchers, and for the life of me I cannot understand how this program is supposed to be making you lose weight. It's very hard for me to have any sort of food related conversation with her because I don't understand the reasoning behind the points system. She said she can eat as many beans as she wants, she eats sugar free desserts, she said she can't eat nuts, she can't eat fruit.

I personally lost a ton of weight through calorie counting and intuitive eating. Weight watchers seems counter to that, and the sugar free aspect makes me think keto? But then she said she can't have fruit so I don't know. Help pls.
