Every Accomplishment Starts With The Decision To Try
Happy Monday!!!
So you’re full swing into your weight loss journey and this warm weather of the start of spring has you eyeballing those shoes next to the door and thinking, “I should go run!” You walk out the door and start running like you’re 13 and a block down the road you’re out of breath and your side hurts… shit.
Where do I start?
I’m glad you asked… Let’s start at the beginning.
When should I start running?
When you’re ready. Vague, I know, but it really is the best answer. Try walking… but you want to run? Again, I know, but this isn’t a race. You have plenty of time for that later. Right now we want to build a cardio base and walking is a great first step. The further you walk, the faster you walk, the more time you spend on your feet the easier the progression to jogging and then to running will be.
How do I get started?
This is your lucky day! Being a beginner runner has never been easier. I’m sure you’ve heard of Couch to 5K and there’s a reason for that. It’s a wonderful program that will take you from doing next to nothing to running for 30 minutes in as little as 9 weeks. Have a mobile phone? Go check out your app store and try searching C25K. I would recommend the ZenLabs app and a lot of users love the Zombies Run app for the story line. Find the one that works for you.
Is there anything I need?
Special running shoes? Nope. Comfortable athletic shoes. I’m not going to tell anyone they need to spend $100+ on a pair of running shoes. C25K is going to have you walking quite a bit for the next couple of months so unless you’re positive that running is going to be your exercise of choice find a pair of shoes that feels good on your feet and allows you to keep moving for up to 45 minutes.
Clothes? Again… something comfortable! There’s no specific uniform for running. You don’t need a racing singlet, or running shorts, or sweat wicking socks. You just need something that will keep you comfy and preferably wick the sweat away from your skin. If it keeps you cool all the better!
Running food? No… Drinks? Again, No. Water works great.
Why can’t I run for more than 60 seconds without wanting to puke?
Slow down. Seriously. Slow down. But you’re already slow? Go slower. But I… no seriously. Slow down. C25K is designed to build your cardiovascular base. This cardio base is the foundation for everything that you want to do later. To get the most out of your training (yes you’re training now…) going slow is the key. You want to keep your heart rate low and keep moving. It doesn’t matter how slow you go as long as you don’t stop. How do you know you’re going the right speed? The easiest way to do that is the conversation test. Can you hold a conversation with someone if you’re running with them? It’ll be labored and it could be a bit difficult but you should be able to get complete sentences out. Don’t have anyone to run with (I feel ya…) try reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, humming, or singing along to whatever it is you’re listening to. I like getting looks from people as I run so I love spitting a verse as I cruise past a couple of old lady walkers.
Don’t give up.
No question this time. Just a statement. Don’t stop. This journey to making running part of your life is so much like your weight loss journey that at time it can be scary. We have days that running sucks (wait til you see my comments below) where you’ll want to just give up and go home… don’t. You can do this. Stick with it. It takes time. It takes dedication. It takes some sweat and perseverance. Some days you’ll finish your workout and nothing will stop you the rest of the day. Other days you’ll want to crash on the couch and kick the dog (don’t do that). Remember though that every step you take is another step from where you are today and one more step closer to where you want to go.
