Disheartened - gained after a month at the gym!

X-post r/fitness - sorry, not sure which would be more relevant!

Last year I hit my highest weight at 226lbs (26F, 174cm). I adjusted my eating habits slightly and then hovered around 214. I then stalled for a few months, eating pretty much what I wanted, and would seem to stick at 215-217 (up until start of this month).

I tend to carry weight quite well and have a fair amount of muscle so I want to get down to 185 or so, so decided to work on my fitness and commit.

I joined a gym finally at the start of the month as I really wanted to start lifting weights and get my former strength back. I hate cardio in the gym (get bored) so I go for brisk walks occasionally and in the gym have started to do lots of free weights/ squats/ deadlifts/ some weight machines, core exercises etc. Each time I have been, my legs have been super sore/ like jelly for 2-3 days afterwards.

I have also combined this with trying to make protein the main part of my diet, and eating more mindfully again. I still eat junk sometimes, but much less so than when I was maintaining 215-17.

The past couple of days I have been working on renovating my house - lots of heavy lifting, shovelling, sweeping etc and didn’t eat as much.

This morning I stepped on the scale as my shorts have been fitting better and was curious as to how much I have lost.

Well it turns out I have GAINED and am back up to 223!? I feel so disheartened and don’t know why or how I have gained that much, I certainly haven’t been eating more than when I consistently weighed less.

Is this at all normal when starting up a weights programme or is there something ridiculously wrong here? Could it be water weight or something?
