Can mental illness be an excuse for bad behavior?

Yesterday at work I dealt with a very rude customer, and I came home crying. I was talking to my mom about how strange her behavior was, and my mom say she might of had Borderline Personality Disorder. I could tell she had some sort of mental illness. I know she can’t control it, but that doesn’t mean she has to be shitty to me.

I’m a firm believer on ending the negative stigma that comes with mental illness, but this was an exception.

I suffer from anxiety and I bullied some people in the past (which I feel very bad about), and used to blame it on my mental health. As I got older I realized my mental illness is not an excuse for my bad behavior.

What are your thoughts on this?
