I don’t have a gym membership, and I work out exclusively at home. I did videos during my wright loss journey. A lot of people tell me that they could never work out at home. I find that it is very possible (I lost almost 25 pounds working out at home and made my goal weight two months ago), but that I had to do a few things differently.
1) I have to plan to do a workout every day, even if it is just 10 minutes. When I was losing, I would usually do an hour, but if I couldn’t, I would do a half an hour. These workouts varied in terms of intensity (one or two days a week, I would do stretching/easier yoga videos or go for a walk), but I tried to make it a daily habit. If I miss it, it’s ok, but I make sure to do some kind of exercise the next day. Now that I am at maintenance, I usually work out 30 minutes a day, and I work out an hour a day maybe only a couple times a week. The upside to working out at home is that an hour is really an hour because there is no driving, parking, etc.
2) try to find a way to push yourself despite having no one around you. I bought a wrist fitness device, and I try to get my heart rate up to 160 (everyone is different) a few times during my workout. Having that goal helps me get a certain quality of workout. I also started using my reflection in the shower door (I don’t have a conveniently located mirror). I have also filmed myself doing certain moves to see how my form is. This helps me improve over time and avoid injury.
3) I treat myself for each month that I achieve my exercise goal of exercising at least five days a week. Since I stopped drinking seven months ago, I thought about all the money I was saving each month and decided that since I also didn’t pay for a gym membership, I would buy myself an outfit from Lululemon when I reached my goal weight. Since then, I decided that I would buy myself something nice from that store each month during which I exercised at least 5 days a week. I had never bought anything from there before because I could never justify the expense, and having nice exercise clothes helps me get excited about working out or doing things that are outside. It sounds really silly, but it has made a big difference, and I get so excited to buy my one thing each month. And it incentivizes me to stay in shape so I can continue to wear them ;) everyone has their own rewards that speak to them, of course.
